Overview: Jennifer Berkley is a straightforward, ambitious, soon-to-be lawyer in the fast, driven city of New York. She doesn’t have the patience or time to deal with people who can’t or won’t give her what she wants.
When her father asks her to visit her aunt in Ohio as her last dying wish, Jen is immediately resistant; especially since she hardly knows her. She reconsiders when her father makes her an offer she can’t refuse: Visit your aunt for the summer and I’ll make you partner in the firm when you return!
Jen finds herself flying to Ohio to meet her Aunt Gabby. She is immediately drawn to her and their relationship starts to blossom. Soon, Jen comes to the realization that she has a genuine love for her aunt.
Ohio is much different than New York, and Jen is just beginning to enjoy the pace of a slower life when she meets Zack LaFaye, a good-looking, helpful man that Aunt Gabby relies on a lot. Zack is suspicious of Jen’s newfound interest in her aunt. And Jen can’t stand his condescending attitude towards her.
Each encounter with him leaves her flustered and annoyed, and their relationship hits highs and lows that Jen can’t figure out. The question is glaring: does she have feelings for him, or does she hate him so much that she can’t decide?
Amidst a country backdrop, Jen discovers feelings and experiences that no city girl is prepared for. As the summer unfolds, she finds herself wondering about her aunt’s illness, simply because she doesn’t seem sick at all!
Using her skill and training as a lawyer, she uncovers a trail of deceit she didn’t see coming, and an answer much different than expected.
With a vengeance, Jen is determined to find out the truth. Someone is lying to her; but who?
